On Saturday, January 22, 2005, Butler University will be =20
hosting its eighth annual Bassoon Day, presented by Yamaha. This =20
year's special guests include Mark Ortwein, Assistant Principal =20
Bassoon/Contrabassoon of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra; and =20
Jennifer Kirkman, bassoonist/teacher from Kokomo, Indiana. Complete =20

Butler University Bassoon Day is open to bassoonists of all ages =
and =20
levels as well as their parents, teachers, and friends. This year's =20
bassoon day will feature Mark Ortwein, Assistant Principal Bassoonist =20=

and Contrabassoonist of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, who will =20=

present a masterclass on orchestral excerpts and solo literature. =20
There will be a special session on =93Bassoon Basics=94 led by Jennifer =20=

Kirkman, a display of Yamaha bassoons and accessories for you to try, =20=

and a Question and Answer session with our "panel of experts". The day =20=

will include performances by Mr. Ortwein, Professor Spaniol, and the =20
Butler Bassoon Ensemble. As always, a highlight of the day will be the =20=

final concert with the Butler Bassoon Day Band in which all bassoonists =20=

attending can play. Butler University=92s Bassoon Day is free of =
charge. =20
Please bring your bassoon, reeds, and accessories along with you.

Mark Ortwein is the Assistant Principal Bassoonist and =20
Contrabassoonist with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. A native of =20=

Las Vegas, Nevada, Mark attended Loyola University in New Orleans for =20=

two years majoring in bassoon and jazz saxophone. In 1989, after =20
transferring to Boston University, Mark received a Bachelor of Music =20
(Magna Cum Laude) degree in Bassoon Performance. While in Boston he =20
won the Alan Mark Roberts Performance Competition, and was the top =20
woodwind finalist for the Boston Pops Concerto competition on bassoon. =20=

Mark joined the United States Air Force Band at March Air Force Base in =20=

California as saxophone soloist and woodwind doubler in 1990, and later =20=

moved to the Air Force Band of the Rockies where he was the principal =20=

bassoonist until 1997. In 2000 Mark completed his Master=92s Degree from =
=20
Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. Over the last 15 years, Mark has =20
performed in professional recordings, musical theater, chamber =20
ensembles, jazz and R & B groups, and many orchestral performances. He =20=

has performed in venues ranging from Carnegie Hall to the Grand Ole =20
Opry to MTV. A versatile performer, Mark plays all the saxophones, =20
clarinets, flutes, and bassoons. He regularly plays saxophone with the =20=

Cincinnati Pops, and has performed in concert with such artists as Tony =20=

Bennett, Aretha Franklin, Barry Manilow, Manhattan Transfer, Dave =20
Brubeck, Rosemary Clooney, Eddie Daniels, and Arturo Sandoval. Mark =20
has been a member of the Kentucky Symphony Orchestra, the Richmond (IN) =20=

Symphony Orchestra, the Dayton Philharmonic Woodwind Quintet, and the =20=

Las Vegas Symphony Orchestra. Mark also studied bassoon with William =20=

Winstead, Matt Ruggiero, Crawford Best, and Yoshi Ishikawa and Jon =20
Beebe; saxophone with Paul McGinley, Garvin Bushell, Craig Yancey , =20
Jeff Barash; and woodwind doubling with John Reilly. In June 2003, =20
Mark was the featured soloist with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in =20=

the second live performance of John Williams=92 Escapades for Alto =20
Saxophone and Orchestra under the baton of the composer. Mark is an =20
active studio musician and records regularly for the Hal Leonard =20
Publishing Company as well as projects for Disney. Mark lives in =20
Indianapolis with his wife, a public school orchestra director, and =20
their two children. He is a Yamaha Artist and plays Yamaha Bassoons =20
exclusively.

Jennifer Kirkman is a graduate of Indiana State University where she =20
received BS and MS degrees in music education. While at ISU she was a =20=

student of Dr. Stanley Petrulis. She continued her bassoon studies =20
with Homer Pence of Ball State University and performed with the Muncie =20=

Symphony for six years. Currently she serves as principal bassoonist =20=

with the Kokomo Symphony Orchestra and Kokomo Park Band and performs =20
with the Mariah Wind Quintet, Bach Trio, and Marion Philharmonic. She =20=

taught instrumental music in the Indiana public school system for 16 =20
years and served as an adjunct music faculty member at Taylor =20
University. For over 20 years Jennifer has maintained a woodwind =20
studio in Kokomo. She recently completed an accounting degree at =20
Indiana University =96 Kokomo.

Doug Spaniol is Associate Professor of Music at Butler University=92s =20=

Jordan College of Fine Arts where he teaches bassoon and courses in =20
music theory. He has also held faculty positions at Interlochen Arts =20
Camp, The Ohio State University, and Valdosta State University. He has =20=

presented masterclasses at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, Michigan =20
State University, and for the Bands of America National Concert Band =20
Festival. Dr. Spaniol has performed as concerto soloist with the St. =20
Petersburg Classical Symphony Orchestra, Solisti St. Petersburg, =20
Central Ohio Symphony Orchestra, Indianapolis Philharmonic, Butler's =20
Symphonic Wind Ensemble and Jordan Sinfonia. He appears as soloist on =20=

two CD's: Bassoon with a View (Innova) and Frank Felice: Sidewalk Music =20=

(Capstone). As principal bassoonist of Sinfonia da Camera, Dr. Spaniol =20=

has recorded for Redcliffe and Zephyr records, toured England, and been =20=

heard on NPR=92s Performance Today. He frequently appears as a =20
performer/presenter at conferences of the International Double Reed =20
Society, and he serves as the Bassoon Chair for the IDRS=92 Fernand =20
Gillet =96 Hugo Fox Competition. His bassoon teachers include William =20=

Waterhouse, Christopher Weait, and E. Sanford Berry. A Yamaha =20
Artist/Clinician, Dr. Spaniol plays a Yamaha YFG-811 bassoon.

prepare a standard orchestral excerpt or movement from a standard solo =20=

work. Performers will be selected on a first come-first served basis =20=

and will be notified well in advance.

week in advance.

strongly encouraged to register by January 10, 2005. However, late and =20=

on-site registration may be possible if numbers permit.
