Subj: [DR-L] "The Golem" - silent film score for DRQ
Date: Wed, 10 Nov 2004 15:05:28 -0500

Hi -

I've recently completed (again) the score for the silent film "The Golem" and
even have finished proofing parts without noticing sections that cry for
improvements. Some of you may recall an earlier version of the score was performed
at IDRS 2001 at Morgantown.

A major part of my goal was to write a score that a small chamber group could
perform without my needing to be involved, unlike most silent film scores
which are pretty much dependent upon the creators for realization. This score
calls for two oboes, English horn, bassoon and conductor. The conductor has a
crucial role in keeping the music in synch with the film. Hopefully, the small
number of players helps keep the project commercially viable: a mid-sized
independant film theater can afford to pay something to the players that makes it
worth their while.

The score is 68 minutes long. It's a blow, I admit, but still playable. I
went to considerable effort to ensure everyone gets a chance to breath and rest
their chops. I think there is a lot of enjoyable music in it, including an
arrangement of a renaissance dance and of the folk dance "Miserlou." There is
definitely something magical about playing music and having it synch up to film,
for an audience.

I'm not sure how to characterize the difficulty level. There are some quick
arpeggios which are a little unusual as they contain augmented and diminished
triads. But I think most professionals would find it easy to manage in two
rehearsals. The rest of us might want to work on it for a few weeks before
performing.

If you are interested and would like to check out the score for yourself, I
can mail you a study score and video tape to review. (I might ask for a small
amount to cover postage.) You'll be able to check out playability for yourself,
as well as see the film with a recorded "piano" reduction (MIDI playback from
a Finale score, actually).

I'll look for replies off-list at my home email of philfrei@-----.

Thanks,

Phil Freihofner
