In a woodwind method class, however, with college age students who KNOW
what an oboe is supposed to sound like . . . in an American style. .
. . using Dunkel reeds, the kids have managed to sound pretty good
right from the get-go. . . . I think the two factors that have made
this so are reeds that have a good response for a beginner and those
beginners HEARING a good sound before they attempt to make a sound.

I remember turning DOWN the opportunity to switch to oboe when I was
14 because the oboe playing I was used to hearing was very thin and
wirery sounding AND I was handed a store bought ***tthing*** . . .we
are talking 1945. . . .and I did sound like a duck. . . . In 1950, in
a completely different atmosphere and with an Philadelphia -style
reed, my atttitude changed and so did my beginning sound. . . .

2 cents.
