Justin:

For bassoon recordings, I'd start with those put out by Michael Rabinowitz,
Paul Hanson, and Janet
Grice (all bassoonists). You can visit their websites for a discography and
then find the CDs at various
internet sites:

For Paul Hanson:

www.jazzbassoon.com

For Michael Rabinowitz:

www.jazzbassoonist.com

For Janet Grice:

www.gricemusic.com

I know Mike and Paul are very interested in passing on their knowledge to
those who want to know
about jazz improv on double reeds. You could contact them through their
website and ask about all of
this and about oboists who they have worked with.

There are also some good examples of pieces played in a jazz style on the CDs
by The Bassoon
Brothers (on their CDs Captured-The Bassoon Brothers and Wanted-The Bassoon
Brothers). Also try
the Neo-Bubonic Bassoon Quartet CD.

The only publication dealing with jazz bassoon that I know of is a great book
put out by Paul Hanson in
2003...Technique Studies for Jazz Bassoon Improvisation...mainly a book of
daily scale patterns, but it
does include some commentary.

Other general jazz publications that you may already know of are:

Chop Monster, Level 1 and 2, by Shelly Berg; this is really for the beginner
to world of jazz
improvisation (high school and older) and includes an instruction book and
backup-band CD

the Jamey Aebersold play-along book/CD series..over 100 volumes that take you
from day 1 on
improvisation though some pretty advanced stuff.

14 Blues and Funk Etudes by Bob Mintzer; a book of tunes with play-along CD's;
the tunes are
substantial, so one could learn to play in a jazz style just by reading the
music (and not using the
chords that also appear)

Charlie Parker Omnibook; written out Parker solos from his various recordings;
pretty intense stuff.

Jazz Improvisation by David Baker

How to Practice Jazz
How to Listen to Jazz, both by David Baker

Jazz Masters of the 20's, 30's, 40's, 50's (4 separate books), published by Da
Capo Press (gives a
historical perspective of jazz).

These are a few suggestions of many general jazz books that are published.

By the way, I've written an article on learning jazz improvisation on bassoon
that is being reviewed by
The Instrumentalist right now. With any luck, it may be published early next
year. Besides basic
suggestions on learning to improvise, I talk about miking options, etc. Hope
some of this
helps...Richard Ramey
