The Viennese oboe is the instrument that the 19th century central
European composers wrote for: Dvorak, Smetana among others. It has low
notes that purr. It is played to the best of my knowledge ONLY in
the Vienna Philharmonic and in Prague. It's fingering system is
similiar to that of the old Albert clarinet. . .with rollers for the
little fingers. Laila Storch used to have one which I played on for
about 3 minutes in 1958. My guess is that it has technical limitations
that the modern French conservatory system improved upon. . . . but if
you've played one, you know what Dvorak was thinking about . . . .In
many ways, I think the baroque oboe might be an ancestor of it. . . I
hear the sounds as similiar. . .

It's not a matter of "better or worse".
