From: rcramey <rcramey@-----.edu> Subj: [DR-L] new work for woodwind quintet and orchestra Date: Fri, 10 Sep 2004 21:13:52 -0400
Dear List:
I wanted to let you know of a new work for woodwind quintet and orchestra that
is worth examining. The Lyrique Quintette premiered this work--Dharmachakra;
Concerto for Woodwind Quintet and String Orchestra last night in Bangkok. It
is by the well-known Thai composer Narong Prangcharoen. Written in July,
2004, this work sounds modern, but retains the essence of Thai melodies. It
includes special effects in both the orchestra and soloists' parts. Duration
is 12 minutes. It is quite a dynamics work; cadenzas for all 5 instruments,
lyrical solo ensemble sections, and a driving extended section for percussion
and piano. If you are looking for a work for quintet and orchestra, one that
would fill many niches on a program, I would definitely recommend looking at
this work. You can contact the composer at the following address:
narongpr@-----.com
He is currently on leave from teaching duties at one of the U's in Bangkok,
and studying at UMKC in Kansas City.
He also has a great woodwind quintet, written in 2003 for the Lyrique
Quintette, called Shadows. Worth looking at also.
