Yeah, makes it more of a challenge to transpose, too, even an octave.
I sometimes double on Clar. for musicals, which was my first band instrument
(some 30+ yrs ago). After a year, I switched to oboe. The band director just
said, "Are you sure?" Luckily, I didn't know what I was getting into! : ^ )
I agree that each instrument has its own particular challenges, oboe having
more than the usual. I'd much rather play the clarinet, from a reed
standpoint. One can usually find a few playable singe reeds out of a box of
10 Van Dorens for the price of what one can pay for a single oboe reed.
Fingering-wise, I don't have a problem with either, except remembering which
alternate keys are which, but I've made a handy reference chart for both
registers for that. Give me the half-hole of oboe over those nasty 'throat'
keys for G#, A, and Bb on clarinet any day, though! But I do like the ease
of breathing and tone of the clarinet. I must have developed quite good
breath control playing oboe over the years, as when I play clarinet, I still
have air left over. Just a habit of playing, I guess.
I know someone who has a covered hole clarinet, BTW. I wonder how rare these
are?
But if I have to double, I make sure I have a pretty flexible reed for both
instruments. I find that playing either sax or clarinet can tend to mess up
my lip for oboe a bit. It's a matter of getting used to it I guess.
I'd like to hear more on others' experiences with doubling.
Miriam
