I'm a college oboe student, but I played clarinet from 4th grade through 7th
grade and in my high school marching band. Personally, I think that the
clarinet is easier. Once you find a mouthpiece and reed brand you like,
you're uaually fine. On the oboe you have to constantly make reeds and
adjust them just right to keep a good, consistent tone. I never found the
open holes on the clarinet to be a problem at all; in fact, I've had more
trouble covering the holes on the oboe. Additionally, the fingering system
of the clarinet is much easier. Sure, there are more fingerings to learn,
but you don't have to worry about whether to use forked F or side F, which
octave key to use, and there are left hand pinky notes for about all of the
right hand pinky notes.
However, I think I enjoy the oboe more now that I'm getting fairly good at
it. It has been a good challenge for me, and I find that making reeds is
fun (when they work).
