It doesn't really matter if it is a subjective view or not. This is because
in the bassoon world the Heckel bassoon is the most widely accepted as the
worlds best bassoon. Even though I've heard that many people prefer their
Puchners or Foxes over their Heckels there are still a bunch of people out
there that own Heckels. The fact of the matter is that it is very hard to
get into a BIG-TIME symphony or orchestra unless you have a Heckel. This
leads me to believe that they really ARE the best bassoon there is.
HOWEVER, I have tried an 8,000 series Heckel(used, of course) and it was no
big whoop. Maybe the fact that it had been completely torn apart and had at
least three huge cracks recently repaired had some effect on the tone and
response, but what do I know, I'm in high school.
Is that enough bassoon talk?
Chris Franz
PS. I get to play the contra in the Salina Symphony next season. Does
anyone have advice about contra reeds? IE... Where do I get them, Who do I
by them from, Are handmade really that much better than store bought, Which
style or brand of reed should I get?
