I was saddened to hear of Jim's death. Although I never met him, I knew him
through the list. He always took the time to write lengthy e-mails to me
when I asked a question, and he shared his story with me when I was going
through a tough time.

In the spring of 2001, I suffered my first severe episode of heart
arrhythmia. A doctor told me that I might not be able to play the oboe
anymore. With Jim's encouragement, I found a different doctor and continued
to play. He told me he had undergone a ring-and-valve surgery himself, and I
instantly knew that my relatively minor problem should be no setback. He
gave me practical advise about how to make reeds that aren't too stiff, yet
still have some tone left in them.

He was a great teacher through e-mail. I can only imagine how good he was in
person.
