I'd think by now someone with access to an electron microscope would
have compared a FRESH reed to a played out one to morphologically see
any difference? As to the notion raised by Kat that a reed has to be
properly "gunked up" to play well, I adhere to that- my reeds last for
months and are soaked only in saliva, as I feel water soaking
artifically swells it too much (opens it up too much)....so I mouth soak
it until it reaches playing wetness. But then I do not finish a reed
until it's been played a bit.
