My son is currently appearing in an MIT production of "Romeo
and Juliet" as the very formal Prince, who tries to stop the
increasingly deadly feud between Capulets and Montagues, and also the
starving Apothecary who plays Hindemith on bassoon. Because nobody
has put money in his hat for his playing, the apothecary is willing
to break the law and sell poison to Romeo. From what I could tell,
most of the people in the audience had never seen a bassoon close up
and thought it was just one more weird prop in an avant-gard
production.
