Always wet the reed first with water, not saliva. The tubules are then more
or less full and the salivary amylase cannot then digest the carbohydrates
in the cane as easily. If you have the time, a good water rinse after
playing and the opportunity to dry (digestion is a wet process) will extend
the life of the reed.
