have always used nail varnish, clear or otherwise, its cheap, easy to
find, appears to last longer than the lifetime of my reeds, and is easy to
remove - what more could you want; although must admit, I got ragged by
my friends when I was a teen.

Have you tried clear nail varnish? It's still a chemical but apart from that
it holds well. (I borrowed my wifes until she got fed up and got me my own
bottle).
