We in Detroit owe a big debt to Paul for saving Orchestra Hall. He will be
missed in the Orch. but plans to still be around saying he's already renewed his
DSO subscription for next year. He has been teaching at Wayne State University
and perhaps will continue there.

In Friday's (6/11) Detroit Free Press, Mark Stryker profiles Paul Ganson, who
"has played bassoon in the Detroit Symphony Orchestra for 35 years." Writes
Stryker, "Ganson is saying good-bye to the orchestra at the close of the summer
season in August. But the DSO's concerts today and Saturday represent the last
time he will make music on stage at orchestra Hall. This is a very big deal.
Because if it were not for Ganson, no one would be making music on the stage at
Orchestra Hall." In 1970, "Ganson became the critical organizer behind the Save
Orchestra Hall movement. Despite its world-class acoustics, the DSO's historic
home had sat abandoned and decaying for decades. The 20-year grassroots drive to
renovate the dilapidated hall led to the orchestra's return in 1989. That laid
the foundation for the Orchestra Place redevelopment that culminated last fall
with the opening of the $60-million Max M. Fisher Music Center."
