Subj: [DR-L] sameer's vibrato et al

Firstly I apologise to Mr. Dlouhy and any others for my encouragement of
off-double-reed-topic posts; I wrote that post in a vodka-induced state
following my Public Law exam (Jennifer's right; I'm studying to be a
lawyer). Thanks, Kat, for your post, which I found very interesting.
Herb, to be quite honest, I have looked at the declassified Justice
Dept. document (now being discussed in the media), but not very
thoroughly. When the hotsy-totsiest legal minds available try to get
around international law to do something that is so clearly (at least to
me anyway) reprehensible, we are in major trouble. Americans who have
never lived abroad for any length of time have no idea how we appear to
the rest of the world. No idea. (That's my broad generalization for
this list for 2004, set flamethrowers on stun, please!)

Sameer, I would be interested to know which notes you're getting the
vibrato on. My teacher, Sara Lambert Bloom, used to talk about one's
"resonance" being better on some notes than on others. D on the 4th
line of the treble clef, F on the top line - those were two notes we
always used to use to try to find our bodies' resonance. I would say
that since, as far as I'm concerned, vibrato has to do with a balance of
the airspeed and the opening of the reed, you could be subtly adjusting
your airspeed/ opening for some notes and that's when your vibrato
"happens". That assumes your vibrato "happens" and is not the result of
you wiggling some part of your anatomy consciously. If that is the
case, it's actually a good thing, because it means you only have to work
out what to do with your air/embouchure to get it to "happen" on other
notes.

Best regards to all of you, and please don't ask me for legal advice
just yet-
