The latest from the New York Times (4/21/04):
THE VIRTUAL ORCHESTRA (CONTINUED) The Opera Company of Brooklyn has
formally withdrawn from a recent agreement with the Broadway musicians
union that would have prevented the opera from using a so-called virtual
orchestra machine, a sophisticated synthesizer that closely approximates
the sound of real musicians. Jay D. Meetze, the company's founder and
principal conductor, said in a statement that he objected to efforts by
the union, Local 802 of the American Federation of Musicians, to dictate
which instruments he could use. "The union has gone too far by trying to
take away my choices for artistic expression," Mr. Meetze said. In
response, David Lennon, the president of Local 802, said his union had
filed an unfair labor practice charge with the National Labor Relations
Board against the opera company. "We stand firm that this machine is not
a musical instrument," he said. JESSE McKINLEY
