I'll tell you what I do, which is my own style, but which has worked for me
for many years now. I wind the cane on the tube as tight as possible
without breaking it, making sure it is on evenly, the sides are closed
properly etc etc. When the winding gets to 1 or 2 turns from the bottom of
the cane, I make 3 half-hitches. Then, after pulling the thread as tight
as possible, I just cut off the guide string, and tear it off from the
spool by pulling hard. That's all there is to it.
Now this is not the most elegant appearing way to do it, since it does
leave the metal part of the tube exposed. But in all these years, I have
never had the winding come undone.
