I played Bass oboe in The Planets a few years back and it was an
interesting experience. I borrowed the bass oboe from either Curtis or the
Philadelphia Orchestra. I got bass oboe cane and tubes and made the huge
reed (for an oboist, it's huge). I know that Glotin makes the tubes and has
bass oboe cane. Bass oboe and heckelphone (heckelphone goes down to low a)
have the same range, so if you have easier access to a bass oboe, it should
be just fine, considering there are fewer than 100 Heckelphones in
existence. It also looks like the Heckelphone has a different key system.
Have fun...
Sincerely,
Jeremy
