Hi Ed,
Re: Hot melt glue. First, be sure you have a HOT melt gg, the 'COOL'
melt don't work as well. I put the reed blades in my left hand fingers
and the gg in my right. Start at the middle wire and quickly go back
and forth to near the butt end, turning the reed slowly to get the glue
on evenly. Then after completing the circle, I make a quick pass near
the butt end to similate (sp?) a turks head. Then be sure to blow on
it to cool it while still rotating it for a minute or so, because the
hot glue will "run" a lot if you just leave it in one position or put
it on a drying rack too quickly. Then, after the glue dries, I paint
the end with colorful fingernail polish (optional) to help quickly
identify the reed. With a little bit of practice you can make a fairly
attractive (operational word: 'fairly') wrap each time. I use it all
the time tho, because it is quick and in our dry Western climate the
wrap NEVER comes loose, even if the exposed wires come loose. It is a
perfect quick seal for a reed and I have never noticed any damping
effect on the vibration of the reed either. Hope this helps.
