Hi there - I can relate to this topic as I have encountered conductors who
are like spoiled children at times, however there are also some players who
have pretty big egos as well. Sometimes players forget their place and
want too much say without enough "give" to the team effort that an orchestra
needs.
I believe playing in an orchestra demands, at least to a certain extent,
putting aside one's individual preferences in favour of a conductor and
colleagues, even moreso if you play in a section (ie in a position other
than principal). Flexibility and an open mind are good characteristics to
possess if you play in an orchestra.
Far too often I have found everyone condemns a conductor because it isn't
the way "they" would do it (either tempo, style etc.) however does this
really mean it is bad music making - maybe sometimes but not necessarily.
One doesn't have to make a lot of money to have a big ego. Perhaps part of
the problem in the music biz is people get defensive because they feel they
must defend their approach to things to prove a point, or simply defend
themselves to keep the engagements they have etc.
Just a few thoughts. This is an interesting thread.
Best regards,
Isaac
