Another anectode re: French/German bassoon. Many years ago I performed
the Francaix Concerto with piano. I decided to play the slow movement on
a Buffet, and made an announcement to the audience, that while I could not
perform the whole piece on the Buffet, I wanted them to get an idea of the
sound of the instrument for which the piece was written. Later, a
bassoonist who could not attend the concert heard a tape of the concert
and asked me, " Which movement did you play on the Buffet?"
