Subj: [DR-L] Teaching Rhythm - Ideas
Date: Wed, 21 Jan 2004 18:29:50 -0500

Hi all,
This is a bit off the beaten path, but I need some help and thought it might
be a great topic for discussion on the list. I teach middle school and high
school band (grades 5-7 and 9-12) as well as a at a college where I am the oboe
faculty. So I get the full gamut. However, I see rhythmic inneficiency and
general "puzzlement" in relation to applying rhythms to sightreading procedures
and being "rhythmically independant."

I want to apply this not only to band students, but also my private students.
How does everyone out there start rhythm from scratch (from a teaching
aspect) so that when applied to a sightreading situation, students are more able to
figure out rhythms (counting and playing) on their own, and to apply them to
music on a sightreading basis? As I said..not just band..but also private oboe
and bassoon students. I want to start my fifth graders off correctly so that
they are not "clueless" and simply play "what the teacher sings" when they play
(of course I try not to do this much at all..but sometimes I just get
frustrated!)

Help!

Shawn
