You are absolutely right not to buy any instrument that you can not try out
first. I'll tell you what I did about this and maybe it will be of help.

I made a written agreement with a potential seller of a Loree oboe, that I
would send him a check for the amount he asked for his oboe, with the
understanding that he would not cash it until I gave him the OK. In return,
he was to send me the instrument for a trial period of 2 weeks, after which
I would contact him again, letting him know my decision. If the decision
was negative, I would return the instrument to him in the same package and
condition that I received it in, and he was to he was to return my check.
He accepted this arrangement, and I did decided to trust him that much, so
he sent me the instrument, and it all worked out fine, since I did decide
to buy it. This arrangement of course still requires a certain degree of
trust on both parts.
