Michael Rabinowitz has been turning skeptics into believers for over 25
years as a performer of jazz and improvised music on the bassoon. He
studied with Donald MacCourt at SUNY in Purchase, NY, but his focus has
always been on improvised music. He can be heard regularly in NYC and
around the world with The Charles Mingus Orchestra, as well as his own
quartet, Bassoon in the Wild. He has performed or recorded with Wynton
Marsalis, Joe Lovano, Dave Douglas, John Hicks, Elvis Costello, and
Paquito D'Rivera. Michael continues to experiment with effects and
tonal enhancements through electrification of the bassoon. This year
Drimala Records will be releasing a new CD called "Play," demonstrating
free jazz duets with pianist Michael Jeffrey Stevens.
Jazzbassoonist.com can keep you informed of his upcoming appearances
and available recordings. Over the past two years The Music
Group/Schreiber Bassoons has endorsed Michael. By the end of this year
his sixth CD as a leader and =93Ocean Eyes=94, his second CD with his
quartet will be available. Michael appearances at the last 8 IDRS
festivals as a performer and teacher at masterclasses have attracted
more and more bassoonists. This will be his first performance at Butler
University Bassoon Day, and he is looking forward to demonstrating and
sharing his knowledge as an improviser of bassoon. Don=92t miss Michael
Rabinowitz live at The Jazz Kitchen on Saturday night after Bassoon
Day! (21 and over. See thejazzkitchen.com for details.)
The Northern Hills Bassoon Ensemble was founded in 1991 to give
advanced students a place to perform and to develop their technique and
musicianship. The NHBE has given concerts or clinics at many
universities and has performed at four Ohio Music Educators Association
conferences and at the 2001 and 2003 International Double Reed Society
conferences. All members of the ensemble are either current or former
students of Russell Hinkle. A graduate of The College-Conservatory of
Music of the University of Cincinnati, Russell Hinkle was assistant
band director of the 101st Airborne Division Band during the Korean War
and was a high school band director for 30 years. He served as
principal bassoon of the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra for 42 years,
and has performed with the Cincinnati Symphony, Indianapolis Symphony,
and many other orchestras.
Dianne Ryan has been a free-lance bassoonist in the Chicago area since
1983. She received a Master of Music degree from Roosevelt
University=92s Chicago Musical College and a Bachelor of Arts degree from
Virginia Tech, both in bassoon performance. After finishing her
Master=92s degree, she was a member of the Chicago Civic Orchestra.
Currently, she is on the faculties of Concordia University, VanderCook
College of Music and Elmhurst College and is principal bassoonist with
New Philharmonic, Elmhurst Symphony and Light Opera Works. A member of
Trio Vivant and Quintuplex woodwind quintet, Ms. Ryan also performs
throughout the Midwest and southern states with various orchestras and
chamber ensembles and has toured Europe and Asia several times with
Chicago Chamber Orchestra and Chicago Symphonic Pops. She has
performed with numerous pop artists such as Mel Torme, the Moody Blues,
and Ray Charles. Ms. Ryan is a frequent clinician, including seven
years as bassoon clinician at the national Bands of America Summer
Symposium. She was a soloist with New Philharmonic in 2002, performing
Vivaldi=92s Concerto in A Minor, and in 2003 performing =93Dead Elvis=94 by
Michael Daugherty.
Doug Spaniol is Associate Professor of Music at Butler University=92s
Jordan College of Fine Arts and Instructor of Bassoon at Interlochen
Arts Camp. An active performer and dedicated teacher, Dr. Spaniol has
presented concerts and masterclasses throughout the US and abroad. As a
soloist, he appeared at the 1998, 2000, and 2001 International Double
Reed Society conferences and in concertos with the St. Petersburg
Classical Symphony Orchestra, Soloisti St. Petersburg, Central Ohio
Symphony Orchestra, Jordan Sinfonia, and the Butler Symphonic Wind
Ensemble. Currently a member of Arb=EDtrio and principal bassoon of
Sinfonia da Camera, he also performs frequently with the Indianapolis
Symphony Orchestra.
