Vienna: go to the opera. . . Ahhh, Jim, my husband and I were there in
the Summer of 02 and we can't remember details like street names. There
is a neat museum near St Stephens that shows historical stuff about the
Vienna Philharmonic and various composers and conductors. Half of it is
a bit kitzhy showing kids how to make & mix sounds but the part about
the orchestra is good. Tour the opera house! Go to Doblingers "Haus
der Musik". We cleaned out their antiquariat back in 1957-58 but you
might find something interesting there. There is a Karajan shop near
the opera house that has books and cds and other musical souvenirs. Bus
service is GREAT! Museums all over the place are GREAT!
Budapest: find and go to the Bartok house. Over priced coffee and
sweets at Gerbeaud. Where? On some big plaza downtown. . .a grand
place that brought back impressions of pre-World War I !
Salzburg: if you can get past the Sound of Music stuff, find Mozart's
birthhouse on Getreidegasse.
I'll look up some stuff and try to send more. . . .
Enjoy!
