Hello,

Our information indicates that orchestras and
orchestra ensembles use an A4 tuning fork (at 440 Hz)
to tune. Is this not correct?

I adjusted the text on the page slightly, but want to
make sure we have it right.

Thank you,

Sandy

My response is that orchestras generally tune to the
OBOE, and that the oboist may use an electronic tuner
as a reference. In my student teaching days in
Amarillo, the junior high string orchestra with which
I worked used an amplified electronic A to which the
students tuned. Are the trivia mavens out of date, or
do folks still use tuning forks somewhere? Please
advise for education's sake! Thanks, and glorious
*Messiah*'s, joyous Advents, happy *Nutcrackers*, and
Merry Christmas to all!
