I know the reed situation. I once played with a man whose reeds were
disgusting - totally black. I asked him what on earth he did to them to
make them that colour? He said he soaked them for hours in schnapps
- presumably drinking the remainder. He didn't volunteer the year he
first started the regular treatment to arundo donax or his liver.

The fumes must have been great for inner staple dry cleaning :-(
