From: James Jeter <jyjeter@-----.com> Subj: [DR-L] Opera Co. of Brooklyn Does it Again! Date: Wed, 12 Nov 2003 01:10:29 -0500
A musician friend just sent me the following press
release from the Opera Co. of Brooklyn - touting their
continued and future use of the "virtual orchestra,"
which we so adamantly opposed last summer. Needless
to say, this was pretty depressing news. This company
obviously could care less about live musicians.
"The Opera Company of Brooklyn's 2003-2004 Season to
Include New Hi-Tech, Fully-Staged Productions,
Northeast Tour, and Free Concerts in the Park.
New York, NY-- The Opera Company of Brooklyn (OCB) is
pleased to announce its fourth season highlights
Mozart and Brooklyn-born composers and will
include fully-staged new productions of three operas,
a Northeast tour of its famous The Magic Flute
production and free opera concerts in Brooklyn° s
parks.
After receiving rave reviews (???) in the American
Record Guide Magazine, the New York Times and the New
York Post last season for its controversial and
sold-out performance of The Magic Flute, the OCB will
co-present with New York City College of Technology,
Realtime Music Solutions and Bianchi & Smith two new
hi-tech productions this season that again combine the
newest Virtual Orchestra technology with the OCB's
live chamber orchestra.
Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro will be performed at
the NYC College of Technology's newly restored,
Voorhees Theatre, 186 Jay Street, downtown
Brooklyn on Friday, February 6th at 8 p.m. and Sunday,
February 8th at 3p.m. Mozart's Mitridate, the King of
Pontus, will be performed at Voorhees Theatre on
Friday, June 11th at 8 p.m. and on Sunday, June 13th
at 3 p.m.
The OCB also celebrates the 50th anniversary of
Brooklyn-born composer Aaron Copland's opera The
Tender Land with performances accompanied by the
OCB Chamber Orchestra in the acclaimed 13-piece
orchestral reduction by Murray Sidlin. Performances
will be Friday, April 2nd at 8 p.m. and Sunday,
April 4th at 3 p.m in Brooklyn at a location to be
announced.
OCB proudly showcases its Resident Artists in a
preview performance of each opera one week prior to
its Brooklyn performances. Dates for the previews
are January 30th for The Marriage of Figaro , March
26th for The Tender Land and June 4th for Mitridate,
the King of Pontus. All previews are at 8 p.m.
at CAMI Hall, 165 W. 57th Street, Midtown Manhattan.
This season, OCB also takes its young talented singers
on the road for the first time for a four-week, 24
performance, Northeast tour of its acclaimed
The Magic Flute production. The OCB tour, managed by
Myers International LTD, is scheduled for April 15th
through May 9th.
Finally, this July OCB brings opera to Brooklyn's
parks for free in a double-bill featuring excerpts
from Brooklyn-born composer George Gershwin's Porgy
and Bess and Leoncavallo's Pagliacci, accompanied by
the Virtual Orchestra with the OCB Chamber Orchestra.
The Opera Company of Brooklyn, founded in 2000, makes
opera accessible and affordable throughout New York
City to all generations by offering a diverse
selection of opera favorites and overlooked rarities.
OCB draws talented singers and musicians from the rich
resources of the New York Metropolitan area, and
allows them to share their enthusiasm and love for the
art form with audiences in an intimate, dynamic
setting.
