Does anyone know why the famous three- and four-note solos in the third movement of Beethoven's Pastoral Symphony are written for the second rather than the first bassoon? The first has 36 bars rest at that time. Other second solos in the same work complement what the first is doing at about the same time. Often low register solos are given to the second, but as these are in the middle register, I doubt that applies here.

Just idle curiosity...
