Subj: [DR-L] Cracked Wing Joint
Date: Fri, 10 Oct 2003 09:40:59 -0400

Dear List et al:
It's been quite a while since I've contributed or asked anything. I'm interested in knowing, however, how many of you have experiences with cracks in bassoons? I recently travelled to the Midwest (southern Ohio) from Ottawa, Canada and my bassoon cracked. It's about a 4-inch crack extending through the pad seats for the high E-flat and High E (F# & G trill keys). Obviously, due to the hard rubber lining of the wing, there's no immediate evidence of air leakage (including at the pads). My bassoon is a Yammie that only 6 years old and I am rather particular about swabbing it and keeping it in good condition.
Question: Is this serious?
Question: Will this get worse?
Question: I am heading back to Ottawa, will this further affect the instrument?
Question: What are ballpark figures for repair costs?

Thank you all in advance for any information you may have.
Elliott MacDonald
