Jennifer,
One small point concerning your valuable information. It seems clear that you are talking about finished tip thicknesses in the range of .7 to .8 hundredths of a millimeter, or rather .007-.008 mm. That's very thin indeed! We always knew there were added aspects to shaping the sound of the oboe d'amore!

Dear List,
I make my tips very thin. My reed design is my own, and there is a
moment
from fullness to uniform thinness, horizontally. To succeed in working
on
less than .8 mms, the only way is to to it when it is dry. Wet cane at
less than
.7/8 mms thick can tear.
I work on the tip as a separate section with a separate technique.
Whatever your reed style, you can do this - but of course, very
carefully and
without any pressure. this is just for that sectin. I make that about
1.5mms
deep, but like a wafer. In fact, it's a question of practice, but
getting rid of any
unevenness can best be done when such a thin surface won't tear - i.e.
when it
is dry.
Don't sneeze with the knife in hand!
