Re getting an even scrape/taper on the tip- typically, the knife is
fulcrumed against the thumb, and one can either "push" the knife with
the thumb or just rotate it in an arc. If one uses the fulcrum method
and pictures the edge as a pendulum, it will taper the tip only if it
hits the cane before it bottoms out at 90 degr. and leaves the tip the
same way. Otherwise, it will leave the tip thicker than the cane just
behind the tip. I use a combination of rocking and pushing, and also
constantly move the knife so a different spot does the stroke- thus
minimising any grabbing or thinning of one spot. To get a really thin
tip, I use cane that is smooth on the gouged side (Danzi) and also use a
single edge razor mounted in a blade holder resembling a knife handle
(Home Depot).
