Subj: [DR-L] Music ed vs. peformance -- To Entire DR list ;-)

Hi fellow doublereeders,
I gave jacqui some advice earlier via private email but just wanted to
commend everyone on the list. Everyone has given such positive advice and it just
reminded me of what this list is all about and how many caring professionals
there are out there. Kudos to each and everyone on this list...it is a pleasure
to be considered a double reed artist and colleagues of each and every one of
you! ;-)

BTW having gone through this same exact situation myself in the past three
years, I can definately tell everyone that having a music education degree does
indeed set you apart from the pack. I had an undergraduate degree in music ed
(oboe/english horn and conducting) and went on to a very prominent
conservatory to do a masters degree in oboe performance. As a result of having music
education background and a bit of teaching experience, I ended up on a full ride
plus a stipend doing an assistantship in the music education department
teaching woodwinds, while I was completing a performance degree.

Subsequently, I am begginning my first year teaching 5-8 band and co director
the high school marching band, in addition have my own concert band at the
high school. In addition to this, I have also been hired on faculty at a college
not far from here to teach the oboe studio, coach chamber music, and in the
future teach music education courses. I was told that the big selling point,
besides having a performance degree in oboe, was that I had a music education
degree and some experience. My point: a music education degree can open up
doors to MANY MANY directions (not just teaching.) as it has for me. By the way, I
love my teaching job in the public school, and on top of it make sure I find
the time to practice as I have a VERY busy performing schedule in addition to
my teaching duties.

Point in case, this list is amazing and the members of it are a wealth of
knowledge and I feel privelaged to know (atleast by email ;-) each and every one
of you, as you have all taught me something along my career road.

Happy End of summer...and happy reeds ! :-)
