well I'm not a professional, but would just like to put my 2cents in...
I totally understand your situation, being 19 myself too and considering
where I should take my oboe as well, my only helpful advice is.
I really think you have to ask yourself if you would be happy as a HS
teacher? Maybe write out a list of all the pros and cons of your
decision
(ie. Continuing grad studies, or being a HS teacher) and talk to someone
knowledgeable about your pros and cons and see what they think. It would
help you discover what you think being a HS teacher is, any
misconceptions you have etc.
Just doing a quick re-read of your email, I got the feeling you really
enjoy playing your bassoon, and performing/practicing so maybe you
should pursue how far your graduate studies will take you?
I doubt you would be excluded from teaching as a HS music teacher if you
chose to do graduate studies first. wouldn't a HS like higher degree
qualified teachers and you would still have a degree in music education
right? But if you taught first THEN tried to pursue graduate studies, I
would think it might be a bit more difficult (motivation / financial
wise) to do? You would have to go through all the auditions, re-entry
into college life, moving from a financial secure position to being a
student (and being a student = poor = sucks IMHO :-( ).. lots of factors
to think about there.
Who knows, maybe you'll get a position in a professional orchestra or at
a college, and have time to teach bassoon at your local high school
too.. that way, you get to be involved with HS students AND be able to
practice/play in your own time too?
Good luck :-)
