Andy:
Thanks for the encouragement. You and all of the other people who have responded to my posting have been constructive, upbeat, and positive. I think that I have had the great good fortune to fall in with a good group of people here. I have to admit that I had some serious doubts about whether I really should try to learn the oboe at my age and with my musical background, but I feel much more confident now.
Best regards,
adh

Andrew,
Good luck getting started on the oboe. I'm sure other doublereed-l members have given you sage advice: find a teacher, get a good instrument, practice, use good reeds, and so on. Motivation and interest are especially important, though, and it sounds like you have those.
Let us know how you're doing, and feel free to ask questions should you need any help. I find it really inspiring and wonderful that you'd like to take up the oboe at this point in your musical career. Bravo to you! Your message just made me smile.
It's so easy to become bitter as a music student. Sometimes I forget why I'm doing it, but there are enough reminders out there for me if I'm open to them.
Nice name, by the way...
