I switched to the oboe from the flute at age 48. I bought a Fox Renard
oboe that was excellent for my purposes. I was able to play 2nd oboe in
a community orchestra in a little less than a year (granted, they were
desperate). I did have an oboist for a teacher, and I think that's very
important at the beginning.
