You have a wonderful teacher in Vancouver WA, just over the bridge from
Portland.
Victoria Racz. Give her a call and she will answer all your questions.
She has an oboe seminar just coming up ( N W Oboe Seminar) and you
should go
along and listen. Dan Stolper is her guest (a very expert pedagogue and
known player)
and that takes place right in Portland itself in a few days' time.
Don't miss it. You'll hear plenty of people who have recently started,
and their tales of
how they got going, what they play etc., whilst you enjoy yourself
listening.

She is a wonderful teacher.
