From: Andrew Hall <tradman50@-----.com> Subj: [DR-L] Learning the Oboe Date: Tue, 5 Aug 2003 13:39:46 -0400
I am seriously considering learning to play the oboe and I would welcome suggestions about what would be a good instrument for me to buy and how I should get off to a good start at this. I would also like to hear some of your opinions about how long it might take me to learn to play this instrument at an intermediate level. Finally, I would also appreciate it if anyone could suggest a good teacher in the Seattle, WA or Portland, OR area (I live roughly halfway between the two cities.)
For what it's worth, here is my musical background: I am 48 years old and have been playing music for the past 42 years. Most of my playing has been on an amateur basis in a variety of groups including jazz bands, concert bands, and orchestras. For most of those years I played trombone and tuba until I injured my lower lip a few years ago. Since that time I have been playing saxophone. At the present time, I have been mainly playing baritone and bass saxophones.
My main reason for wanting to play oboe is that the concert band I play in has no oboe player and I would like to cover that part. (Actually, I have been covering the oboe parts on soprano saxophone from time to time, but an abomination like that cannot be allowed to continue!) I am also hoping to eventually play in the local community orchestra.
