To Bear Woodson (et al) The only concerto actually remaining written by
Wolfgang A. Mozart is his K.V. 191 Concerto in Bb Major for Bassoon and
Orchestra. The Mozart Second Bassoon Concerto available from some editions
is a work from the same period by written by the french composer Francois
Devienne. There are a set of duets for two bassoons by Devienne which
exactly match the theme(s) of the "Second Bassoon Concerto of "Mozart"..
Additionally, from biographies of Mozart and letters to his parents, there
were possibly at least 4 other conerti wrtten by Mozart for Bassoon and
Orchestra, but these are likely destroyed by fire or otherwise not available
at this time for publication .Maybe one day we will have the good fortune of
the recent discovery of part of a Beethoven oboe concerto - as a real second
(or more) concerto for bassoon and orchestra, found somewhere in a library
or private home in Europe. That would be great for the bassoon's slight
repertoire of classical period excellent repertoire. Sincerely, Gerald
