If it is maintained properly, it will probably never wear out. What will
happen is that the blade will get dull because of the abrasive nature of
cane. But then the answer is to have it sharpened. The rest of the machine
should not wear out, unless of course it has not been manufactured well. I
have had my machine in use since 1966 when I first bought it, and it still
works the same as when I first got it. I have had the blade sharpened 3 or
4 times (I don't remember which) since then.

The parts will not slide smoothly, and irregularities in the final result
will be apparent. It may make strange noises, and you may feel the carriage
is not sliding smoothly. If you inspect the rod the carriage rides on, you
may find areas that have worn differently from other areas.
