So, if i am laying out the living quarters for my characters, where do you
make your reeds? kitchen, bath, music room, potting shed, root cellar?

I applaud your research techniques! I have a nice little back house
attached to my (detached!) garage. I teach and make reeds there. I have a
desk made from two low filing cabinets supporting an old solid core door. It
makes a nice, big, stable work area and was inexpensive to put together. I
got the filing cabinets at a used office supply place for cheap and the door
for free. A friend's condo association was installing all new doors and I
asked if I could have one of the old ones!
The place is one room with a bathroom. I have a wall air conditioner,
my desk, a couch, lots of homemade shelves and a stereo system. The place is
a mess. It doubles as a storage area. On the desk there are 20 or so reeds in
various states (that's only because I just weeded out a bunch of old and
failed ones!) and tools of every variety.
Take care,
Phil Feather
