I have also used wire - I prefer not to, but sometimes its a matter that
I have to make every piece of cane work for financial reasons. I only use
it where the reed tends to close too much - its particularly useful in
areas of very low humidity where one tends to go through reeds at a faster
rate.
I make my own reeds and sometimes, when experiencing cane that tends to
close, I have ended up with very serviceable reeds simply by using wire,
but since I have moved to Sydney, where the humidity is much higher, I
havent had to wire at all (I have been here 6 years)

Dear Cal and oboists;
I have been experimenting with wire on some reeds. I think it's beneficial
if your reed opening is too closed, or on a reed that might give you a few
more practice sessions. I find it helps a lot on commercial reeds since the
y
tend to close up which seems to be due to the fact that the cane is pushed
quite far down onto the staple.
I don't usually do so on my own handmade reeds.
I noticed that Ace hardware doesn't carry the very fine gauge wire; one can
make do with the finest they have; one turn around is probably enough.
