David, Joe is probably referring to the Tabuteau "lessons" which were tap
ed by Wayne Rapier, if memory serves. In any case, what Tabuteau was talkin
g about in that part that many people refer to, was not to exhale completel
y before taking each breath. What he suggest is to exhale completely and th
en play with any residual wind in order to get a grasp on which muscles are
doing the work when one is blowing hard. If you do that you will feel what
's doing the bilk of the work in that area. That's really all there is to i
t.
I had a student come in one day and every time he'd play he would turn pu
rple within a few seconds. Finally I asked what he was doing and he said th
at he had heard that Tabuteau recording, and he was doing what the old mast
er had said, which was to exhale completely before playing. Needless to say
, that incorrect notion was fixed quickly.

Thus both embouchure and breath support are subject to adjustment. This
adjustment is within a given range, and perhaps for pedagocical purposes,
just getting students to stay within range is a good first goal. But eventu
ally, I think the best way of thinking about the process is the "X" diagram
(the relationship of bite & breath over volume while maintaining correct p
itch) which Robinson credits to Tabuteau. I'd just like to add a note-level
component to that graph, to illustrate the different registers on the oboe
.

I would like to read this. Can you tell me where I can find it, please? T
hank you.
