When I go to the doctor for a general checkup, he always tries to cram a
stick into my throat. This, he says, is to cause the throat to open so he
can see inside. I can easily open my throat and, as the stick makes me gag,
I always refuse the stick & open my throat. I am able to do this
voluntarily and with enough opening for the Dr. to take a look without the
stick. Try starting to yawn. Even before your mouth opens, the throat
opens.

the "throat." Anyone who doubts this should try right now, sitting at their
computer, to "open their throat." I have long since given up that
terminology in favor of "opening the mouth." This we can easily control,
and I think that is what actually is desired in order to affect the shape
and volume of the oral cavity to affect the quality of the tone produced.
