You can always luck out, even with bad bassoons, but generally the
information you get on this list is pretty accurate about makes to
avoid.....

There's no harm in trying an instrument out, but it's definitely best to do
this with a professional to consult with as it might feel fine but not be a
great instrument in the long run. Also, a professional/technician can tell
you what can be done to improve the instrument and/or if it's worth the
cost. Things like sealing, pad seating make a huge difference and
sometimes can be done not too expensively. Also investment in a decent
bocal (Heckel, Yamaha, Leitzinger etc.) can very often improve a mediocre
instrument.

Usually though, as said, the makes that come up as names to avoid do so
because they just don't have good track records.
