Hi,
I live in Oboe-friendly (weather/crack/ wise) Northern California. One of
my (oboe) students is off to college in Alaska next year. She is not
majoring in music, but hopes to continue playing the oboe while she studies
nursing.
She is ready to buy an oboe. (Currently plays on a School instrument -- a
Fox).
Usually, I would look for a used "professional" oboe for a student this age,
but we were discussing the extreme weather possibilities in Alaska, and
wondering if it wouldn't be easier/safer to just go with a Plastic Fox. I
have heard it can be very DRY as well as cold, which seems like a bad
combination for cracking. I also wonder how far it would be to the nearest
oboe technician--and am concerned about an oboe sitting around in a UPS truck
in very cold weather.
Any advise? She will be in School in Anchorage. She will be looking for an
oboe teacher as well, and we would appreciate making a contact with an oboist
from that area who might be able to give us some advise. Any Alaskan
oboist on the list?
Thanks!
Suzanne Eraldi
