Yes, I saw that picture. And thanks for advising the instrument's name. It
seems to be similar to the earlier generations of oboes that use a
primitive reed stuck all the way in the mouth, that is, not touched or
cushioned by the lips at all, and totally free to vibrate on its own,
undamped by the use of any embouchure other than that needed to hold the
thing as a whole in the mouth in the first place. I would imagine that the
raucous sound produced by this arrangement would be fierce indeed, but the
photo was very interesting. So thank you for pointing that out.
