Hi Emily,
The first rule of shapers is that ALL shaper tips are expensive!
I would recommend the Gilbert -1 or the Gilbert 1; they are both pretty
standard shapes that should work for most American oboists.
What does your teacher recommend?
My first shaper tip, bought in (gulp!) 1976, was a Brannen X Narrow.
They aren't made anymore. I'm now using a Carlos Coelho (sp?) tip which
I like almost as much.
One thing you might do, if you want aren't sure which shape you want, is
buy a few pieces of cane shaped on each tip you're interested in. That
way you can get an idea of what to expect, and you can compare results.
Remember that the shape (along with how long you tie) will affect the
opening, the pitch, and the freedom with which the finished reed
vibrates. The length at which you tie is important because each shape
has a taper. Your tubes should fit snugly on your mandrel, and the tip
of the mandrel/end of the tube is the crucial point where the taper of
the shape and the actual size of the "throat" of the tube must fit. You
might have to experiment with some shapes to find a length at which to
tie, depending on your tubes. If your tubes are not all the same size,
you would be well advised to standardize them before you purchase a
shaper, since these two variables need to balance each other properly.
Good luck,
