I have had opportunities to try a few different shaper tips, including
Adam and RDG. In my opinion, the RDG is a little bit harder to use because
the four edges are rounded ever so slightly, making it easier to take a
little too much off of one or more of the sides as you go. The Adam are more
square, so it's easier to feel and see and there is a diminished chance of
"messing up."

This is coming from someone who is even picky about rulers (the lines
have to be really clear, etc). Out of my oboist friends, those who agree
that there is a difference between the edges of the different shapers don't
neccessarily think it matters when it comes to the finished cane.

We like to argue about staples. Some say brass staples produce a warmer
sound, others say they either corrode or get bent out of shape too easily.
Some say silver projects better, etc. Neither my ability to make reeds nor
to play oboe is so consistent that I can tell a difference.
